Anthony Gordon has reportedly agreed personal terms with recently crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. However, the German giants still have substantial negotiating to do with Newcastle United who are firmly holding out for a minimum of £75 mln for the 25-year-old winger.

According to talkSPORT, a significant gap in valuation remains between the two sides. Bayern have made the England international a priority signing after wrapping up their domestic title but prying him away from St James’ Park will not be straightforward. Gordon signed a new long-term contract two years ago that keeps him tied to the Magpies until 2030.

Premier league rivals and the World Cup factor

Gordon’s stellar form has not gone unnoticed on home soil after bagging 17 goals across all competitions this season. Arsenal have reportedly shown genuine interest in the player, while his boyhood club Liverpool have consistently monitored his progress. Despite their admiration, the Reds are not expected to launch a formal bid this summer.

The upcoming World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico is adding further complexity to the transfer saga. Should Gordon feature and perform well for the national team, Newcastle are well aware that his market value could skyrocket even higher.

Howe insists absences are tactical

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remained tight-lipped regarding the transfer speculation last week but insisted that Gordon remains entirely committed to the club.

The winger recently missed defeats against Arsenal and Bournemouth due to a hip injury and was subsequently left on the bench for a victory over Brighton and a draw with Nottingham Forest. Howe was quick to clarify that club politics played no part in his squad selection.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle after the match at the City Ground, Howe explained that the changes were purely tactical. He noted that the team had performed well in Gordon’s absence and that deploying Joelinton out wide was a deliberate attempt to add defensive solidity to a backline that has struggled since January. While confirming Gordon is back to full fitness and training well, Howe tellingly added that he is also «looking at the future».

Finishing a difficult season

Gordon’s arrival on Tyneside in January 2023 was not without its own drama, as he effectively forced a £40 mln move away from Everton.

He now faces an uncertain few weeks as Newcastle attempt to finish a disappointing domestic campaign on a high note. Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League table, the Magpies will host relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday before travelling to Craven Cottage to face Fulham on the final day of the season.
