Trump-Xi Summit Overshadowed by Live TV Emergency and Media Chaos

The high-profile meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing was overshadowed by a series of dramatic incidents involving international media coverage and rising tensions over China’s geopolitical ambitions.
During a live broadcast of the «CBS Evening News» from Taipei, anchor Tony Dokoupil abruptly cut to a commercial break after a cameraman suffered a medical emergency off-camera. CBS later confirmed that the employee was «okay and recovering.» The unusual interruption occurred while the network was covering Trump’s state visit and the summit with Xi.
The summit itself focused on trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and the ongoing Iran conflict. Xi reportedly warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to «clashes and even conflicts» between China and the United States, while Trump said relations between the two powers could become «better than ever.»
Meanwhile, several reports described chaotic scenes among journalists and camera crews covering the event. Media tensions escalated amid tight security and logistical difficulties surrounding the summit. CBS also faced scrutiny after broadcasting from Taiwan instead of Beijing because of reported visa complications.
Trump arrived in Beijing on May 14 for a two-day state visit — his first trip to China since 2017. The visit included ceremonial meetings at the Great Hall of the People and discussions aimed at stabilising increasingly strained U.S.-China relations.
