Rumoured God of War Spin-Off to Centre on Faye and Tyr Before 2018 Reboot

Sony Santa Monica is reportedly crafting a new God of War spin-off for the PlayStation 5 that shifts the spotlight away from the franchise’s iconic protagonist. According to recent industry leaks, the unannounced project will instead centre on Kratos’ wife Faye and the Norse god of war Tyr.
Information circulating as of May 14, 2026 suggests a drastic departure from the series’ recent Scandinavian backdrop. The prequel will reportedly transport players to a time long before the 2018 soft reboot to explore an array of different folklore. The mythologies rumoured to be featured include Japanese, Chinese, Native American.
In addition to the geographical and cultural shift, the game will supposedly feature a much faster and more dynamic combat system that draws heavy inspiration from the Devil May Cry franchise.
Imminent state of play reveal?
Industry insiders claim that Sony Interactive Entertainment is gearing up to officially unveil the title during a State of Play broadcast slated for late May or early June 2026. While exact timing remains under wraps, prominent leaker NateTheHate confirmed that the reveal window is fast approaching.
«I have a general window but no exact date,» NateTheHate stated regarding the timeline. «So it’s too soon to share any specifics about State of Play.»
Adding fuel to the fire, another well-known leaker operating under the moniker The Snitch posted a cryptic teaser on social media that simply read: «Faye of War.»
Divided fan reactions
The prospect of a game entirely removing Kratos from the leading role has sharply divided the PlayStation community. Some fans are thrilled by the creative freedom a prequel offers.
An online user named Marathoniano expressed immense optimism, noting that an unexplored backstory holds massive potential and would be a brilliant surprise if revealed at the next showcase.
Conversely, other players strongly prefer to stick with established character arcs. A user going by warrior lady fiercely opposed the rumoured change in direction, asking «what is Sony smoking» while claiming nobody asked for a game focused solely on Faye.
Taking a more balanced view, user dontcallmewave reminded fans of the initial scepticism surrounding the 2018 release.
«On one hand, no one asked for a game centred around Faye. But on the other hand, no one asked for a game about Kratos as a struggling single dad and that turned out to be awesome.»
Sony’s long-term vision
Despite the ongoing frustration of development leaks within the industry, PlayStation leadership appears steadfast in its strategy. Sony Head of Content Christian Svensson confirmed the company holds high expectations for its upcoming first-party lineup. This rumoured action title is strategically positioned as a flagship exclusive meant to showcase the PS5’s hardware capabilities through to 2031.
