A rapidly expanding blaze originating in the Santa Ana River bed has triggered mass evacuations and left several people injured in Riverside County, California. The fire, officially named the Bain Fire, ignited on Tuesday morning shortly before 11:30 am in the Mira Loma neighbourhood of Jurupa Valley.

According to the state firefighting agency Cal Fire, the flames initially took hold near the intersection of Bain Street and Limonite Avenue.

Fuelled by dense vegetation, the blaze exhibited a moderate rate of spread throughout the afternoon. By 8:30 pm, it had scorched roughly 1,375 acres with containment sitting at just 10 per cent. Emergency crews confirmed that some structures had been lost to the flames, though it currently remains unclear whether these were primary residences or outbuildings.

A significant emergency response is actively underway. Cal Fire officials stated that 100 personnel, 22 fire engines and two helicopters have been deployed to tackle the inferno. Local crews are being supported by municipal teams from San Bernardino, San Diego, Ontario and Riverside.

«Air and ground resources will remain on scene overnight, working diligently to build containment lines around the perimeter of the fire,» Cal Fire officials noted in their Tuesday evening briefing, adding that aircraft would continue dropping water and retardant throughout the night.

Authorities have reported four injuries connected to the incident. The exact nature of these casualties has not been disclosed, leaving it uncertain whether they stem from burns, smoke inhalation or other causes.

The escalating threat prompted authorities to issue mandatory evacuation orders for upwards of 24,000 residents. Displaced locals are being directed to an emergency shelter established at the La Sierra Senior Centre, located at 5215 La Sierra Avenue in Riverside. Further evacuation warnings have been issued for surrounding areas, advising residents to be prepared to flee at a moment’s notice.

The Bain Fire is one of two major wildfires currently impacting Riverside County. Further south, the Verona Fire has consumed nearly 200 acres near Hemet and forced its own set of emergency evacuations.
