George Russell successfully converted his Sprint pole into a victory at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve but the 23-lap dash was defined by soaring tensions within the Mercedes camp.

The Silver Arrows locked out the front row and cleanly navigated the opening corners but Kimi Antonelli quickly applied immense pressure to his more experienced teammate. Riding a wave of confidence and armed with a heavily upgraded car, the championship leader refused to give Russell any breathing room.

The battle reached boiling point on lap six. Antonelli launched an aggressive attack into Turn 1, resulting in the two cars banging wheels and forcing the teenager onto the grass. The loss of momentum allowed McLaren’s Lando Norris to slip past into second place.

A furious Antonelli flooded the team radio, demanding a penalty and claiming Russell had forced him off the track. The escalating complaints eventually prompted a rare and stern intervention from team principal Toto Wolff, who instructed his young driver to concentrate on his driving rather than moaning.

Norris pushes Russell to the limit

With the Mercedes squabble resolved, Norris set his sights on the race leader. Russell began to struggle with visible tyre graining on his older medium compound rubber, leaving him vulnerable to the pursuing McLaren.

Despite suffering from a lack of grip, Russell brilliantly managed his pace and defensive positioning. Norris kept the gap within a second to utilise his overtake mode but could never quite find the traction required to launch a decisive move.

On the final lap, a desperate Antonelli attempted to reclaim second place with a massive late-braking lunge on Norris into Turn 1. The Mercedes driver overshot the corner entirely, allowing Norris to easily cut back inside and secure the runner-up spot behind the victorious Russell.

Late drama for Ferrari and the midfield

Behind the leading trio, the battle for the remaining points provided late fireworks. Lewis Hamilton made a spectacular start to challenge the McLarens early on but paid the price with overheating tyres in the closing stages.

The seven-time world champion found himself vulnerable on the final lap and was aggressively overtaken by Oscar Piastri and his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, dropping him down to sixth place.

Max Verstappen endured a relatively quiet and lonely race to finish seventh as Red Bull continued to find their footing with their new upgrades. Meanwhile, Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad capped off a phenomenal debut at the Montreal circuit. The young driver kept his nose clean to hold off Williams’ Franco Colapinto and secure the final Sprint point in eighth.

Further down the order, the FIA handed out a pair of 10-second time penalties to Nico Hulkenberg for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, and to Sergio Perez for forcing another driver off the circuit.
