Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title has been dramatically halted following a brutal five-set defeat to Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, Reuters reports.

The 39-year-old Serbian appeared to be cruising into the fourth round of the French Open before suffering a spectacular collapse on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Fonseca mounted a remarkable comeback to secure a 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 victory after nearly five hours of gruelling tennis.

The shock result means Djokovic remains tied with Margaret Court on 24 major singles titles. His departure also blows the men’s draw wide open. With world number one Jannik Sinner exiting the tournament a day earlier and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz absent through a wrist injury, Roland Garros is now guaranteed to crown a first-time major winner.

A match of two halves

Just a week after celebrating his 39th birthday, Djokovic initially looked imperious. Rolling back the years in the Parisian sunshine, he dominated the early exchanges with a flurry of heavy forehands and exquisite drop shots. The veteran swiftly took the first set and capitalised on a single break of serve to clinch the second.

However, Fonseca, who was an infant when Djokovic claimed his maiden Grand Slam at the 2008 Australian Open, refused to capitulate. The 19-year-old found another gear in the third set and broke early in the fourth to force a decider, combining blistering ball-striking with remarkable composure.

Despite falling 3-1 behind in the fifth set, the Brazilian displayed immense mental fortitude. He clawed his way back to parity, broke Djokovic’s serve to edge 6-5 ahead and sensationally closed out the match with three consecutive aces.

«I felt like John Isner»

The landmark victory makes Fonseca the first teenager to ever defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam fixture. Speaking after the match, the youngster dedicated the triumph to his mother who was celebrating her birthday in the stands.

«I actually didn’t believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being on the court,» Fonseca admitted. «What an idol we have and what a pleasure it was to step on the court against him, so I thank him. I’m very happy.»

The Brazilian also paid tribute to his opponent’s enduring stamina, noting that Djokovic seemed fitter despite the massive age gap.

«I was just trying to hit the ball as fast as I could, I mean Djokovic doesn’t miss and we still think he’s 20,» he added. «At the end of the match he was more fit than me, which is crazy and when the day was getting darker I felt much slower. In the beginning I was struggling with the heat and not feeling good.»

Reflecting on his dramatic finish to the match, Fonseca joked about his sudden serving prowess:

«I just believed that I could do the aces, it was crazy. I have never done that before. I’m super happy that I could finish like this. I felt like John Isner.»

Fonseca will now face either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul in the next round on Sunday.
