Uzbekistan’s national football team fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Canada in a recent international friendly staged in Edmonton. The fixture ultimately proved costly for the visitors, not merely due to the final scoreline but because of a potentially devastating injury to a key player.

Ganiev suffers major setback

The most concerning moment of the fixture arrived during the first half when midfielder Azizjon Ganiev picked up a worrying knock. Unable to carry on, he was withdrawn in the 23rd minute and replaced by Abbosbek Fayzullaev.

Initial reports from the medical staff suggest the damage could be severe. There is now genuine anxiety within the national camp that Ganiev might be sidelined for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup.

A game of two halves

The opening 45 minutes ended goalless despite both sides carving out decent opportunities. Uzbekistan’s talisman Eldor Shomurodov had the clearest chance to put the visitors ahead but failed to convert a brilliant one-on-one situation.

Following the half-time interval, Canada manager Jesse Marsch introduced fresh legs that dramatically shifted the momentum in favour of the hosts. Their renewed attacking energy paid off on 58 minutes when Jonathan Osorio finished off a rapid counter-attack to break the deadlock.

Late drama seals the win

In a bid to salvage a draw, Uzbekistan tweaked their formation, introduced substitutes and attempted to push forward. However, they struggled to apply sustained pressure on the Canadian goal.

The hosts ultimately sealed their victory deep into stoppage time. Jayden Nelson found himself in space and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov.

Despite the disappointing result, there was a silver lining for the visitors in defence. Centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov emerged with credit after producing a resolute display, making crucial interceptions and successfully thwarting several dangerous Canadian attacks throughout the evening.
