Ivanka Trump Confirms Albanian Resort Project as Protests Intensify
Ivanka Trump has publicly confirmed plans to develop a luxury resort on Albania’s Sazan Island alongside her husband, Jared Kushner, as opposition to the project grows across the Balkan country. The €1.4 bn development is being led by Kushner’s investment firm, Affinity Partners, and would transform the former military island into a high-end tourism destination.
The confirmation comes as thousands of protesters gathered in the Albanian capital, Tirana, demanding that the government halt the project over environmental concerns. Demonstrators argue that construction could damage protected coastal ecosystems near the Vjosa-Narta landscape, home to flamingos, sea turtles and other wildlife.
Environmental groups have warned that the resort could threaten one of the Mediterranean’s most sensitive natural areas. Recent protests have also focused on construction activity and restricted access to parts of the coastline, with clashes reported between demonstrators and private security personnel.
Despite the criticism, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has defended the project, arguing that it will attract foreign investment, create jobs and boost tourism. The government previously granted the development strategic investor status, allowing it to move forward under special investment rules.
The dispute has become one of Albania’s most closely watched development controversies, highlighting the tension between economic growth and environmental protection as the country seeks to expand its tourism industry.
