Santa Monica Studio announced God of War Laufey, a brand new mainline entry in the critically acclaimed franchise. In a historic first for the series, players will step into the shoes of Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus.
The reveal took place during the June State of Play broadcast. Alongside a cinematic debut trailer, the development team treated fans to roughly 20 minutes of gameplay footage that detailed the upcoming storyline and showcased a revamped combat system.
The narrative shifts away from the familiar Norse realms and transports players to Eternity. This enigmatic afterlife dimension serves as a battleground where deities from various mythological pantheons actively compete against one another.
The plot centres on Faye as she embarks on a highly dangerous quest to rescue Kratos and Atreus. Her journey begins after a meticulously crafted plan to protect her family is suddenly compromised, forcing her to take matters into her own hands.
Evolved combat and traversal
While the gameplay footage confirms that God of War Laufey will retain the signature cinematic style of its predecessors, it introduces entirely new mechanics for both movement and enemy encounters.
Faye will head into battle wielding a legendary sword complemented by the magical abilities of the Golden Hand of the Jotnar. According to the developers, this fresh combat system allows players to string together diverse attack combinations and places a much stronger emphasis on vertical gameplay during fights.
Returning talent and new companions
Fans will be pleased to hear that actress Deborah Ann Woll is reprising her role as Faye following her acclaimed performance in God of War Ragnarok. She will be accompanied on her journey by a highly unusual companion named Frank, a sentient cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid of The Boys fame.
The ambitious project is being spearheaded by Ariel Lawrence, a studio veteran who has worked at Santa Monica for nearly two decades. Following the main presentation, the developers released an exclusive interview discussing the broader future and continued expansion of the God of War universe.
An official release date for God of War Laufey remains under wraps, though it has been confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Furthermore, reports suggest that Sony is still actively working on ground-up remakes of the original Greek-era titles that first established Kratos as a gaming icon.
