Hong Kong’s John Lee Promotes Central Asia Ties at Tashkent Business Forum

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee has highlighted the city’s role as a «super connector» between China and global markets during a business luncheon in Tashkent, calling for deeper economic cooperation with Central Asia.
Speaking to government officials, business leaders and investors in Uzbekistan’s capital, Lee said Hong Kong could serve as a gateway for Central Asian companies seeking access to international finance, trade networks and investment opportunities. He emphasized the city’s position under the «one country, two systems» framework and its role as a bridge between mainland China and the rest of the world.
Lee pointed to growing economic links between China and Central Asia, particularly following the expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative, and encouraged greater collaboration in areas such as logistics, infrastructure, finance, innovation and green development.
The Hong Kong leader also highlighted opportunities for Uzbek and Central Asian businesses to use Hong Kong’s financial markets and professional services sector to support international expansion and fundraising efforts.
The visit forms part of Hong Kong’s broader strategy to strengthen economic relations with emerging markets and expand its presence in Central Asia, a region that has attracted increasing attention from investors due to its strategic location and growing economies.
Officials from both sides expressed interest in expanding trade, investment and business partnerships as economic ties between Central Asia and China continue to deepen.
