The underdog New York Knicks are suddenly on the brink of their first NBA championship since 1973. Following a tense 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, the team has taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven NBA Finals, Reuters reports.

While Jalen Brunson powered the Knicks through Game 1 with his fourth-quarter offence, it was his crucial defensive awareness that sealed Friday’s triumph on the road.

A bizarre and dramatic finish

The closing moments of the game featured a highly unusual and decisive sequence. San Antonio’s star player Victor Wembanyama accidentally threw the ball off the back of his teammate Stephon Castle as Castle retreated towards the midcourt line. Brunson quickly intercepted the loose ball and drew a crucial foul.

With just 9.5 seconds remaining on the clock, Brunson converted one of his two free throws to give New York a narrow one-point advantage.

«I saw he wasn’t looking so I just tried to go get it,» Brunson explained regarding Castle. «I just didn’t want Wemby to come back and get it.»

The Spurs still had an opportunity to snatch the win but Wembanyama’s 20-foot jumper missed the mark as the final buzzer sounded. Castle later noted he was simply running up the court to give Wembanyama space to dribble and never saw the pass coming.

Wembanyama took full responsibility for the costly late-game turnover, admitting he «messed up» and essentially threw the ball away. However, the French star vowed to use the regret to fuel both his own performance and his team in the next fixture.

Record-breaking momentum

The dramatic climax secured New York’s 13th consecutive postseason win. This remarkable run pushes them past the 1999 Spurs to claim the second-longest playoff winning streak in NBA history. It also marked their eighth straight victory away from home.

Knicks centre Karl-Anthony Towns praised the collective resilience of the squad after securing the win.

«It’s a team effort. We found a way to win these two games,» he stated. «It’s a shout-out to everybody coming together for a greater cause.»

Key player performances

Despite squandering a 14-point lead in the final quarter, New York managed to recover thanks to a balanced scoring attack.

  • New York Knicks: Karl-Anthony Towns dominated the paint with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Jalen Brunson and Mikal Bridges both added 20 points while OG Anunoby contributed 17. Landry Shamet provided a vital 13 points off the bench.
  • San Antonio Spurs: Victor Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points, nine rebounds and four blocks despite committing four turnovers. De’Aaron Fox secured 20 points, Dylan Harper tallied 15 from the bench, and both Stephon Castle and Devin Vassell finished with 14 points each.

The series now shifts to New York for the next two clashes. The Knicks will look to capitalise on their home-court advantage at Madison Square Garden in Game 3 on Monday and Game 4 on Wednesday as they chase basketball immortality.
