Fabio Cannavaro has urged the Uzbekistan national team to focus on the unique experience of the World Cup rather than fixating solely on the final scoreline. Speaking in a recent interview with Championat.asia, the head coach emphasised the importance of embracing the moment on football’s biggest stage.

«If you go there thinking that we have to win, it is impossible to enjoy the tournament,» the Italian tactician explained.

He noted that the squad’s primary objective should be to demonstrate their true capabilities to the world. Cannavaro deliberately wants to avoid placing extra burdens on his players because he knows that the external expectations, media scrutiny and fan pressure will already be immense.

The manager pointed out that the global stage brings intense emotions even for the most seasoned professionals. Every player is fully aware that their entire nation and millions of international fans are watching their every move. To illustrate his point, Cannavaro recalled his own experience from the 2006 World Cup.

Just before a match against Ghana, striker Luca Toni confessed to feeling an overwhelming sense of anxiety. Cannavaro’s advice to his former teammate was remarkably straightforward:

«Calm down and enjoy it.»

According to the Italian specialist, all the gruelling physical and tactical work is completed long before the tournament actually begins. Once the competition is underway, the squad simply needs to focus on playing.

He suggested that the players should approach their matches as if they were having a casual game against friends or relatives. Cannavaro believes this relaxed mindset is the ultimate key to unlocking their best performance, entertaining the supporters and achieving a favourable outcome.

Uzbekistan are set to kick off their World Cup campaign with their opening match in Mexico City on June 18.
