A violent knife attack at New York City’s Penn Station has left five individuals requiring hospital treatment, BBC reports. The incident occurred just as local authorities were ramping up security protocols ahead of a high-profile visit from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The stabbing took place at approximately 19:00 EST (00:00 BST). According to a statement issued by the Fire Department of New York to U.S. media outlets, the victims sustained a range of wounds. Emergency responders rushed all five individuals to Bellevue Hospital for urgent medical attention. Medical staff are treating one person for serious injuries, two others for moderate injuries and the remaining two victims for minor wounds.
Following a brief manhunt through the busy transit hub, the New York Police Department confirmed that a suspect was successfully taken into custody. Law enforcement officials disclosed to CBS News that the stabbing appears to have been a completely random act of violence. Furthermore, ABC News reported that the attacker was described as emotionally disturbed and was ultimately apprehended by Amtrak police officers.
Heightened security
The violence unfolded at the major railway station situated directly beneath Madison Square Garden. The iconic sporting arena is scheduled to host Game 3 of the NBA finals on Monday evening featuring a highly anticipated clash between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Security in the surrounding area was already undergoing a significant reinforcement due to President Trump’s planned attendance at the match alongside New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In light of the presidential visit, city officials had proactively introduced strict event precautions for the evening. These new security measures include a strict no-bag policy for all stadium attendees and the cancellation of an outdoor watch party that was originally scheduled to take place right outside the venue.
