Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha has been ruled out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad due to FIFA regulations, despite impressing during the Three Lions’ preparations for the tournament.

The 17-year-old winger made a memorable senior debut in England’s warm-up victory over New Zealand, earning widespread praise and being named Player of the Match after a standout performance.

However, FIFA rules state that any player added to a World Cup squad before the tournament must have been included in the country’s provisional list of up to 55 players submitted in advance. Ngumoha was not named on England’s provisional squad, making him ineligible for selection even if injuries occur before the team’s opening match.

England manager Thomas Tuchel brought Ngumoha to the United States as part of a group of training players, but only Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott was included on the provisional list and therefore remains eligible for a late call-up.

The rule has sparked debate among fans, with many questioning why a player who is training with the senior squad and participating in official warm-up matches cannot be drafted into the final tournament squad. Nevertheless, FIFA regulations leave no room for exceptions, meaning Ngumoha’s World Cup dream will have to wait.
