U.S. National Guard Partners with Uzbekistan for Joint Military Exercises

Personnel from the Mississippi National Guard, backed by U.S. Central Command, have concluded a series of emergency preparedness and response drills alongside staff from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The collaborative training sessions took place in the city of Almalyk between May 18 and 21. The bilateral initiative aimed to bolster the capabilities of local first responders when handling large-scale natural disasters.
A major focus of the command and staff exercises involved developing robust action plans to manage the devastating aftermath of severe earthquakes. Uzbek rescue teams participated in practical simulations designed to test their operational readiness under extreme pressure.
During the event, first responders practised a variety of essential recovery tasks:
- Restoring vital communication networks
- Clearing blocked transport routes
- Executing safe civilian evacuations
- Maintaining on-the-ground security
- Coordinating with international partners to secure humanitarian aid
Robert Short from the 112th Military Police Battalion provided insight into the strategic goals of the joint manoeuvres.
«We focused on how joint task forces are deployed and managed during natural disasters, and also looked at the similarities and differences between emergency operations and military operations,» he stated.
Beyond physical rescue operations, the training curriculum addressed the modern administrative challenges that frequently arise during major catastrophes.
Additional educational modules were provided to prepare the emergency teams for complex public relations and logistical hurdles. These supplementary sessions focused heavily on civil-military cooperation, broader crisis management strategies and effective methods for countering dangerous disinformation during periods of national vulnerability.
