Mexico have successfully launched their 2026 World Cup campaign by securing a 2-0 victory against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The tournament hosts dictated the tempo for the vast majority of the opening fixture and fully capitalised on their dominance during an action-packed second half.

The home side began the match with intense energy and immediately placed South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams under heavy pressure. This relentless early approach yielded results within the opening ten minutes.

Following a swift interception by Alvaro Fidalgo deep in opposition territory, Julian Quinones drove toward the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a precise low strike to break the deadlock in the ninth minute.

Mexico had several chances to extend their advantage before the half-time whistle. Quinones was incredibly unlucky to see a fierce effort rattle the post while Brian Gutierrez failed to capitalise on a dangerous run straight through the centre of the pitch.

Discipline crumbles in second half

The momentum of the match shifted decisively just five minutes after the restart. South African midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card in the 50th minute after pulling down Gutierrez to deny a clear one-on-one goalscoring opportunity.

Armed with a crucial numerical advantage, Javier Aguirre’s squad took absolute control of the proceedings. Their sustained pressure doubled the lead in the 67th minute when Roberto Alvarado whipped an inviting cross in from the right flank, allowing veteran striker Raul Jimenez to power a definitive header into the back of the net.

A chaotic conclusion

Any remaining hope for a South African comeback evaporated during a chaotic final ten minutes that saw the referee reach for his pocket twice more.

In the 84th minute, South Africa were reduced to nine men. Following a lengthy VAR review, Themba Zwane was issued a straight red card for catching Alvarado in the face with a stray elbow.

However, the disciplinary issues were not entirely one-sided. Deep into stoppage time, Mexican defender Cesar Montes also received his marching orders after hauling down Khuliso Mudau to stop a promising attack.
