Elon Musk Becomes World’s First Trillionaire After Record-Breaking SpaceX IPO

American entrepreneur Elon Musk has become the world’s first trillionaire following the highly anticipated initial public offering of his aerospace company SpaceX.
According to calculations published by Reuters, the billionaire’s personal stake in SpaceX is now valued at a staggering $866 bn. When combined with his existing assets in the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, his total net worth has eclipsed $1.1 trn.
The historic wealth milestone was triggered after SpaceX floated 555.6 mln shares at $135 apiece. The monumental move generated $75 bn for the aerospace firm and firmly cemented its position as the largest IPO in corporate history.
The Mars caveat
Despite the record-breaking figures, The Washington Post has suggested that Musk’s newly acquired trillionaire status is not entirely clear-cut. The publication highlighted that a substantial portion of his astronomical wealth is heavily tied to performance-based SpaceX shares.
These specific assets will only yield returns if the company manages to hit exceptionally ambitious growth targets and successfully realises its ultimate project of establishing a human colony on Mars. The newspaper noted that if these conditional shares are excluded from the final calculation, Musk’s fortune actually sits just shy of the one trillion dollar mark.
A fortune greater than nations
To put the sheer scale of this wealth into perspective, Reuters pointed out that a $1.1 trln fortune comfortably dwarfs the annual gross domestic product of dozens of nations.
For instance, the combined GDP of the Central Asian states, comprising Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, stood at just over $500 bn last year. Of that regional total, Uzbekistan accounted for more than $147 bn. Musk’s personal wealth is now more than double the economic output of the entire region.
The «Elon premium“
Musk originally built his formidable global reputation through the runaway success of Tesla and SpaceX before significantly expanding his cultural influence by acquiring the social media platform Twitter for $44 bn in 2022. Since rebranding the platform to X, he has evolved into a highly prominent and often controversial figure in American political and public life.
Financial analysts and market experts suggest that his unprecedented wealth is heavily driven by what is known as the “Elon premium». This phenomenon describes the inflated market value of his businesses which is driven not just by traditional financial metrics but by immense investor faith in his grand visions and his proven ability to execute massive engineering projects.
