Lewis Hamilton has finally broken his duck for the Scuderia. In a blisteringly hot 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona-Catalunya, the seven-time world champion delivered a masterclass in tyre management, racecraft and pure pace to claim his very first victory since joining Ferrari in 2025.

The win marks Hamilton’s seventh career triumph at this circuit and his first trip to the top step of the podium since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. Crucially, the landmark result ended a dominant Mercedes run and halted Kimi Antonelli‘s incredible five-race winning streak.

A strategic masterstroke

Starting from the front row alongside pole-sitter George Russell, Hamilton initially settled into a rhythm behind his former Mercedes team mate. With track temperatures soaring past 51 degrees Celsius, tyre degradation proved severe across the grid, forcing the front-runners into an intense game of strategic chess.

The defining moment of the race arrived on Lap 41. Fernando Alonso suffered a suspected battery issue and parked his Aston Martin on the grass near Turn 9, triggering a Virtual Safety Car. Ferrari and Hamilton reacted perfectly. Diving into the pits for a brilliantly timed 2.8-second stop, Hamilton swapped to fresh hard tyres and emerged right back into the lead of the race.

Once in clean air, the Ferrari man was simply untouchable. He relentlessly extended his advantage lap after lap, leaving the rest of the field trailing in his wake to eventually cross the finish line with a massive margin.

Late heartbreak for Mercedes

While Hamilton cruised out front, absolute chaos unfolded behind him. Russell found himself struggling for pace on his final stint and fell into the clutches of a charging Antonelli. On Lap 61 the teenage championship leader executed a sensational, elbows-out overtake on his team mate down the main straight to snatch second place.

However, Antonelli’s joy was incredibly short-lived. Just two laps later his engine expired, bringing his race to a sudden and smokey halt. The drama compounded immediately for Ferrari on the exact same lap; Charles Leclerc, who had been fighting back through the field, went off through the gravel and reported a complete loss of power steering, forcing him to retire the second Ferrari in the pits.

Ollie Bearman of Haas also seemingly retired during this chaotic period.

The dramatic double-retirement promoted Russell back to second place and elevated McLaren’s Lando Norris to the final spot on the podium. Max Verstappen took fourth, whilst Oscar Piastri secured fifth ahead of a recovering Isack Hadjar in sixth.

Midfield joy for Alpine and VCARB

The late-race attrition opened the door for excellent results further down the order. Alpine celebrated a fantastic double-points finish, with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto crossing the line in seventh and eighth positions respectively.

There was equal celebration at VCARB (Racing Bulls), who also locked out the remaining points positions. Liam Lawson brought his car home in ninth, closely followed by rookie team mate Arvid Lindblad in tenth to cap off a highly rewarding afternoon for the midfield outfits.

Championship implications

Antonelli’s catastrophic DNF has blown the 2026 drivers’ championship completely open. Despite failing to finish, the young Italian still leads the standings after his dominant start to the year. However, the chasing pack has taken a massive bite out of his advantage.

Following his historic victory, Hamilton now sits just 41 points adrift of Antonelli. Russell also made ground despite his late struggles and sits 48 points behind his team mate. With Ferrari proving their latest upgrades can genuinely challenge Mercedes on demanding aerodynamic circuits, the battle for the world title is officially back on.
