Justin Gaethje Stops Ilia Topuria to Claim UFC Lightweight Title in White House Bout

American mixed martial artist Justin Gaethje has achieved his dream of becoming an undisputed world champion. In the main event of the unprecedented UFC Freedom 250 card held on the grounds of the White House in Washington D.C., the 37-year-old secured a stunning technical knockout victory over Spain’s Ilia Topuria to claim the lightweight title.
The highly anticipated bout concluded dramatically following the fourth round when the referee and cageside medical staff deemed Topuria unable to continue. The victory marks a monumental career milestone for Gaethje who successfully utilised his trademark striking power, relentless pressure and devastating leg kicks to wear down his younger opponent over 20 minutes of intense action.
Third time lucky for veteran
For Justin Gaethje, widely known to fans as «The Highlight», capturing the undisputed 155-pound championship is the culmination of a gruelling career. This historic matchup represented his third attempt at undisputed gold. He had previously fallen short in title unification bouts against undefeated Russian icon Khabib Nurmagomedov and Brazilian submission specialist Charles Oliveira.
Prior to this crowning achievement Gaethje had held the interim lightweight championship and the ceremonial «BMF» title but the undisputed belt had always eluded him. The spectacular stoppage improves his professional mixed martial arts record to 28 victories and five defeats, cementing his legacy as one of the most entertaining and dangerous fighters in the history of the sport.
A bitter first defeat for Topuria
The result delivers a crushing blow to the championship aspirations of 29-year-old Ilia Topuria. Nicknamed «El Matador», the Georgian-Spanish fighter entered the octagon completely undefeated and was attempting an ambitious move up from the featherweight division to secure double-champion status.
Despite showcasing his exceptional boxing fundamentals, formidable grappling and renowned speed during the early exchanges, Topuria ultimately struggled to cope with the natural size and raw power of the seasoned American lightweight.
The technical knockout marks the first blemish on Topuria’s professional record, leaving him with 17 wins and a single defeat. Following this setback he is widely expected to return to the 145-pound division to defend his existing featherweight crown.
