Iran and New Zealand Draw 2-2 in World Cup Opener

The Iranian national football team recorded a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their first match of the 2026 World Cup. The Iranian side fell behind twice during the game before recovering to secure a point.
New Zealand opened the scoring in the seventh minute of the match. Forward Chris Wood gained possession near the penalty area and passed the ball to Elijah Just who struck it into the net.
Following the goal Iran increased their offensive pressure. Mehdi Taremi hit the goalpost before the team equalised in the 32nd minute. Ramin Rezaeian gained control of the ball following a series of deflections and scored to level the match before halftime.
New Zealand took the lead again in the 55th minute. Just initiated an attack and completed a passing sequence with Wood before scoring his second goal past the Iranian goalkeeper.
Iran equalised nine minutes later. Rezaeian delivered a cross from the right side of the pitch and Mohammad Mohebi headed the ball into the net off the post to make the score 2-2.
During the final stages of the game Iran created several further chances. Saeid Ezatolahi directed multiple attempts at the goal but New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe made the necessary saves. New Zealand defended their half and relied on counter-attacks to maintain the draw until the final whistle.
