The production team behind the hit dating programme Love Island USA has been left devastated following the sudden death of executive producer James Barker. The 40-year-old television veteran suffered a fatal medical emergency last week while actively working on the eighth series of the reality show.
Both ITV America and the streaming platform Peacock issued a joint statement to express their profound sorrow. Network officials described his passing as an unimaginable loss that has deeply impacted everyone involved with the reality programme and the wider corporate family. To mark his significant contributions to the franchise a dedicated on-screen tribute has been scheduled for the broadcast on June 16.
A decade of television success
Barker first entered the television industry in 2011 and steadily built a highly respected resume. Prior to joining the American iteration of Love Island in 2020 he lent his production expertise to several prominent factual entertainment shows. His early career credits include Forged in Fire, Pawn Stars, Counting Cars and the popular Netflix makeover series Queer Eye.
For the last three years he had served as the lead executive producer for the Peacock dating show. In this senior role he was responsible for managing the overarching production of the series and carefully curating its popular musical soundtrack.
Breaking streaming records
Under his creative leadership alongside host Ariana Madix the reality series reached unprecedented commercial heights. The programme has become renowned for capturing a massive younger demographic and turning its cast members into instant internet celebrities. Barker’s influence was particularly evident during the summer 2025 run as the seventh series broke viewership records to become the most-watched original season in Peacock’s entire history.
Just days prior to the tragic incident the producer took to social media to celebrate the launch of the new series. Sharing a photograph with his colleagues on Instagram he praised the dedicated crew, thanking the «huge squad of brilliant people» responsible for bringing the summer show to life.
At present a specific cause of death has not been officially confirmed.
