Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo has urged his squad to avoid complacency as they prepare to face Uzbekistan in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. Speaking on Tuesday the Argentine manager noted that the first week of the tournament has already proven that there are no easy games on the global stage.
The South American side are making their highly anticipated return to the competition after failing to qualify for the 2022 edition. While they enter Wednesday’s clash at the Estadio Azteca as heavy favourites Lorenzo stressed the immense importance of respecting an Uzbekistan team making their very first World Cup appearance.
Respecting the debutants
During his pre-match press conference the Colombian manager warned that the opening days of the tournament have shown that no team can be taken lightly.
“The World Cup is showing us that there are no small teams and nobody should be underestimated,” Lorenzo informed reporters.
He praised the Asian side for their recent solid results, capable manager and well-organised tactical approach. Forward Luis Suarez backed his manager’s cautious stance by noting that the opening fixtures have essentially eliminated the concept of clear favourites across the board.
Winger Carlos Gomez also highlighted the specific tactical threats posed by the opposition. He pointed out that Uzbekistan are a rapid side who excel during attacking transitions, warning that the Colombian defence must remain vigilant to avoid being caught on the counter-attack.
Rodriguez fit to lead
Colombia arrive in Mexico riding a wave of momentum following a brilliant qualifying campaign. The squad boasts serious attacking talent including Bayern Munich star Luis Diaz and veteran playmaker James Rodriguez.
Addressing recent fitness concerns surrounding his captain Lorenzo confirmed that Rodriguez is in solid physical condition. The manager praised the midfielder’s unique ability to dictate the flow of a game and produce decisive moments of magic even without covering as much ground as his teammates.
Lorenzo also dismissed any doubts regarding his team’s overall intensity when compared to the top European sides. He argued that true footballing quality relies on more than just relentless running and pointed to recent positive performances against Croatia and France as proof of their elite level.
A sea of yellow in Mexico City
The Colombian squad will be backed by immense vocal support with over 65,000 fans expected to pack into the historic Azteca stadium. The massive influx of travelling supporters has seen yellow shirts completely dominate the streets of Mexico City in the build-up to the fixture.
Suarez admitted that the overwhelming backing makes the squad feel as though they are playing on home soil. He noted that this passionate support fills the players with pride but also adds a deep sense of responsibility to deliver a winning performance.
Concluding his press conference Lorenzo expressed his deep gratitude to the travelling fans. He promised that his team aims to play beautiful football to give their nation a reason to smile after an eight-year absence from the world’s biggest sporting event.
