Colombia have launched their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in their Group K fixture. Despite a resilient defensive display from the Asian side and a spirited second-half equaliser, the South Americans’ attacking quality ultimately proved too much in a match filled with intense physical battles, woodwork strikes and late drama.

The match began with Colombia immediately establishing dominance over possession. The South Americans confidently shifted the ball across the pitch to probe a deep and heavily populated Uzbekistan defence orchestrated by head coach Fabio Cannavaro.

The opening stages were highly physical and punctuated by frequent stoppages. Colombia’s Johan Mojica earned the game’s first yellow card in the tenth minute for halting a promising run by Abbosbek Fayzullaev. Despite their territorial advantage, Colombia initially struggled to find a clear breakthrough. Jhon Arias came close in the 19th minute when he drove towards the penalty area and fired into the side netting.

The pressure continued to mount as the half progressed. In the 32nd minute Colombia created a massive opportunity when Arias slipped a precise pass into the box for Luis Diaz who struck a first-time effort cleanly against the post.

The intensity spilled over shortly after when Uzbekistan’s Abdukodir Khusanov received a yellow card for a robust challenge on Diaz that sent both the defender and the winger crashing into a pitchside cameraman.

Munoz breaks the deadlock

Colombia’s persistence finally paid off in the 41st minute. Following a sustained period of pressure Diaz found space deep in midfield and delivered a perfectly weighted ball towards the six-yard box.

Daniel Munoz timed his run to beat the offside trap and volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov right under the crossbar. The late first-half goal forced Uzbekistan to rethink their conservative game plan heading into the break.

Cannavaro’s changes spark a revival

Uzbekistan emerged for the second half with renewed attacking intent following a double substitution by Cannavaro. The tactical shift paid dividends on the hour mark.

Dostonbek Khamdamov broke down the left flank and delivered a deep cross to captain Eldor Shomurodov. While Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas managed to parry Shomurodov’s initial low strike, the rebound fell kindly to Fayzullaev who calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to level the score at 1-1.

Diaz restores the advantage

The parity was short-lived. Just five minutes after Uzbekistan’s equaliser Colombia reclaimed the lead through relentless pressing. Gustavo Puerta dispossessed Otabek Shukurov in the Uzbekistan half and drove forward before sliding a pass to Diaz on the left side of the penalty area. The winger struck a low effort that Yusupov managed to touch but could not prevent from finding the bottom corner.

Late drama seals the points

As the match entered eight minutes of stoppage time, Uzbekistan pushed desperately for a second equaliser. They came agonisingly close when Sharof Mukhitdinov (playing alongside Mozgovoy) curled a brilliant effort from the edge of the box just past the top corner. Moments later Arias had to make a crucial last-ditch intervention to deny Shomurodov a tap-in at the back post.

With Uzbekistan committing bodies forward in the dying moments Colombia exploited the spaces left behind to seal the result. Substitute Juan Hernandez won a crucial battle on the right wing and delivered a sweeping cross to the back post. Jaminton Campaz was left completely unmarked and guided a precise header into the bottom corner to finalise a 3-1 victory for Nestor Lorenzo’s side.
