Uzbekistan Airports has signed a public-private partnership agreement to construct a brand new aviation hub in the capital region. The company’s press service confirmed that a consortium spearheaded by the Saudi Arabian firm Vision Invest will act as the primary project partner.

Under the terms of the new agreement the development duties will be shared between the government and the international consortium. The foreign investors will take charge of constructing and subsequently managing the main passenger terminal alongside its adjacent forecourt. Conversely the state will retain full responsibility for the construction and long-term operation of the core airfield infrastructure.

Javlonbek Umarkhodjaev, the Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Airports, highlighted the immense value of the international collaboration.

«Through this partnership with leading international firms we gain not only investment but also unparalleled expertise in designing, building and operating the world’s largest airport complexes using cutting-edge technologies,» Umarkhodjaev stated.

Project scope and timeline

The massive infrastructure project will be situated in the wider Tashkent region where an expansive plot of land measuring over 1,300 hectares has already been allocated for the development. Company officials emphasised that the preliminary relocation of existing infrastructure and the initial phases of construction are scheduled to commence this month.

Once completed the sprawling new aviation facility will feature:

  • Two modern runways
  • A state-of-the-art passenger terminal
  • More than 90 dedicated aircraft parking stands
  • Various other highly advanced operational facilities

The new airport is projected to become fully operational by 2030. Upon opening the highly anticipated hub will possess the capacity to serve up to 20 mln passengers and process an impressive 300,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
