Uzbekistan is steadily transforming into one of Eurasia’s most important transport and logistics hubs, according to the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB), which highlighted the country’s growing role in connecting major regional trade routes.
Speaking at an EDB event in Tashkent, the bank’s chief economist Evgeny Vinokurov said Uzbekistan’s strategic location and expanding transport infrastructure are helping it become a key link between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The EDB’s proposed «Eurasian transport framework» aims to boost regional transport capacity by connecting major east-west and north-south corridors.
The bank expects projects such as the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway and the Trans-Afghan transport corridor to significantly increase cargo flows through Uzbekistan. According to EDB estimates, container traffic through the country could quadruple after completion of the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan rail link.
Uzbekistan, which joined the EDB in 2025, has become a focal point for the bank’s regional investment strategy. The lender plans to support transport, logistics, energy and industrial projects as part of broader efforts to strengthen connectivity across Central Asia.
The EDB believes that a network of interconnected transport corridors could increase freight capacity across Eurasia by up to 40%, while positioning Central Asia, and Uzbekistan in particular, as a critical transit crossroads for international trade.
