India Orders WhatsApp to Halt New Username Feature

The Indian government has demanded that WhatsApp justify and immediately suspend the launch of its new username feature. A recently reviewed official letter reveals that this intervention in the messaging app’s largest market is part of an escalating campaign against digital anonymity that recently targeted Telegram.

Meta announced earlier this week that it was gradually introducing the username update worldwide. The tool allows individuals to secure a unique handle and communicate without revealing their mobile numbers. However, a government directive dated July 1 has given the tech giant just three days to respond and explicitly banned the feature’s release pending further regulatory consultations.

This latest move intensifies New Delhi’s broader policing of online spaces. It follows a temporary blockade of Telegram last month over similar anonymity fears and years of friction with Elon Musk’s X regarding content removal orders.

Security fears vs platform privacy

With over 500 mln active accounts India represents the largest market for WhatsApp. This standoff places Meta in a difficult position as it balances regulatory compliance with growing fears of state overreach into social media.

The national IT ministry argued that allowing people to message others without disclosing a phone number could drastically escalate cybercrime. Officials warned that the update could provide cover for bad actors to conduct phishing, digital arrest scams and widespread impersonation attacks.

The strict notice directly follows a June report from the Home Ministry which highlighted how such privacy mechanisms complicate identity verification and actively aid cybercriminals. This heightened regulatory scrutiny mirrors the recent pressure placed on Telegram over identical features that enable users to interact without sharing personal contact details.

In response a Meta spokesperson confirmed that the platform has introduced the option to reserve usernames but noted that the actual messaging capability is not yet active. To mitigate impersonation risks the company has already pre-emptively secured handles for government bodies, public figures and verified Meta accounts.
