Russian Daredevils Arrested Following Empire State Building Proposal

Instead of booking a standard romantic venue, a pair of Russian urban explorers decided to celebrate their engagement 443 metres above Manhattan. The illicit stunt atop the Empire State Building’s antenna on Wednesday resulted in a marriage proposal, a political statement and their swift arrest.
Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nikolau, 33, who gained global notoriety through their 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, managed to evade the landmark’s stringent security protocols. Dressed in black athletic wear with Nikolau sporting her signature feline-inspired headpiece, the couple ascended to the very tip of the skyscraper’s spire.
Once secured near the flashing aviation light, the thrill-seekers deployed a black flag bearing a clear message:
An arresting engagement
Broadcast live to their followers via social media, aerial footage captured the duo eventually lowering themselves to a broader section of the antenna. There Kuznetsov dropped to one knee. Following an ecstatic embrace, Nikolau immediately began photographing her new ring to share on Instagram.
The romantic atmosphere was abruptly cut short by the New York Police Department. After shutting down the busy midtown streets below, officers apprehended the couple without a struggle. Both now face a raft of severe allegations including burglary, criminal tampering, reckless endangerment, trespassing and disorderly conduct.
Authorities remain baffled as to how the pair circumvented the heavily fortified safety systems that have protected the iconic Art Deco tower since 2001.
A city distracted
The audacious climb took place while a sweltering New York City was already caught up in a festive frenzy. The metropolis is currently battling a severe heatwave while preparing for the monumental 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the highly anticipated nuptials of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce.
Management at the Empire State Building took a dim view of the security breach. A spokesperson for the site condemned the stunt and wryly noted that the couple could have legally secured the 102nd-floor observation deck by simply purchasing the venue’s $1,000 proposal package.
However, the extreme nature of the engagement barely registered with Nikolau’s family. Reached by journalists, her father—a professional Russian circus performer—brushed off concerns about his daughter’s incarceration.
