A special inauguration ceremony in Tbilisi has marked a fresh milestone in the diplomatic and cultural friendship between Georgia and Uzbekistan. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev jointly presided over the dedication of a new monument honouring the revered medieval thinker, statesman and poet Alisher Navoi.

During the official addresses dignitaries reflected on the universal appeal of Navoi’s masterpieces. His extensive body of work transcends national borders to form a vital part of global literary history. By championing timeless ideals such as justice, humanism and enlightenment his writings have shaped social philosophy and artistic expression for hundreds of years.

Reciprocal respect and shared history

Erecting this landmark in the heart of Georgia acts as a physical testament to the enduring alliance bridging the two republics. Speakers at the gathering noted that deep-rooted trade networks and shared spiritual values have linked their respective populations for centuries.

This modern gesture beautifully mirrors existing tributes back in Central Asia. The Uzbek capital of Tashkent already boasts a prominent statue and a major thoroughfare dedicated to the iconic Georgian wordsmith Shota Rustaveli. This mutual admiration was further cemented in 2025 when local authorities in Tbilisi christened a major public park in Navoi’s honour.

These permanent memorials represent just a fraction of a wider artistic revival between the two countries. Recent initiatives have seen a vibrant exchange of traditions and creative projects. Showcasing this growing bond Tashkent recently hosted dedicated Georgian culture festivals while Tbilisi welcomed its own showcases celebrating Uzbek cinema and traditional arts.
