A towering 26-metre statue of Lionel Messi became the focal point for celebrations in Patagonia as Argentina secured their place in Sunday’s World Cup final. The national team came from behind to defeat long-time rivals England 2-1 in Atlanta.

A crowd of approximately 300 locals in the Neuquen province town of Cutral Co watched the semi-final broadcast beneath the monument. The community of 40,000 relies heavily on the nearby Vaca Muerta shale gas and oil reserves. As the final whistle blew, fireworks exploded around the statue’s head and thousands more rushed to join the festivities.

Artist Aldo Beroisa designed the colossal sculpture, which depicts a smiling Messi kneeling and pointing towards the sky. Local officials inaugurated the monument in June, declaring it the world’s tallest tribute to the football star.

The dramatic late victory keeps Argentina on course to become the first nation since 1962 to win consecutive World Cup titles. They now face Spain in the showpiece event.

Historic rivalry fuels national passion

The fixture carried profound historical weight for Argentine fans. Matches against England routinely evoke memories of the 1982 Falklands War, known locally as the Islas Malvinas conflict, alongside Diego Maradona’s 1986 «Hand of God» goal.

Ahead of kick-off, Vice President Victoria Villarruel amplified the political undertones on X. She described the encounter as more than just a game, referencing the Malvinas, Maradona and the opportunity to stop «the invaders».

The emotional resonance was palpable at a watch party for military veterans in Quilmes. Juan Carlos Salinas, a 74-year-old veteran, fought back tears while describing the result as «something big» for his comrades.

While the atmosphere across Argentina felt subdued at the start of the tournament following their 2022 triumph, the mood shifted as the team navigated several tense comeback victories. The rising public stress even prompted newspapers to publish advice from cardiologists regarding heart attack symptoms.

Following Wednesday’s result, downtown Buenos Aires transformed into a massive street party. Fans waved flags and drivers sounded their horns well into the night.

«I’m overcome with emotion,» said Mariano Gecik, a 49-year-old university professor. «Once again, it’s about resurrection, resilience and sheer grit; we truly deserve our place in the World Cup final.»
