French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron made an unexpected appearance at the Stade de France on July 17 to attend the first day in France of the BTS Arirang world tour. The political figures were spotted enjoying the musical performance from an exclusive VIP seating.

The presidential couple quickly became a viral sensation across international social media platforms after photos surfaced showing them holding the K-pop group’s signature light sticks. The illuminated devices are commonly known by fans as ARMY Bombs. Concert attendees shared videos of Brigitte Macron adorably attempting to turn on her interactive light stick as the couple settled in to watch the sold-out stadium spectacle.

Fans immediately praised the band’s massive global influence. Many joked online that the musical group possesses the unique power to turn anyone into a devoted supporter, including the most powerful world leaders.

Global leaders embrace the K-pop phenomenon

The Parisian concerts mark the grand conclusion of the European leg of the ambitious Arirang tour. This two-night engagement in the French capital was projected to draw an estimated 160,000 enthusiastic attendees. Following these performances, the ensemble will depart to begin the North American phase of their extensive touring schedule.

Macron is notably not the only head of state to publicly embrace the South Korean act during their current global trek. The group’s massive popularity recently sparked a genuine political flashpoint in Mexico after concert tickets completely vanished within minutes of going on sale.

Public frustration over the ticketing situation grew so intense that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stepped in to publicly support the fans. In an extraordinary demonstration of soft power diplomacy, Sheinbaum directly appealed to the South Korean president to request additional concert dates for her country. She also participated in a high-profile meeting with the band members, highlighting the rapidly growing cultural ties between the two nations.

The musicians are scheduled to continue making history later this week when they perform the first-ever halftime show at the FIFA World Cup final alongside Shakira, Justin Bieber and Madonna.
