The house in Braunau-am-Inn, which Adolf Hitler’s parents rented for just a few months, has been used as a library, workshop, and school to help remove its dark history. Now, a police station will keep neo-Nazi supporters away.
From July 22, the building will officially be home to the local police station and district police command, according to the Austrian Interior Ministry.
«This is a model police station … and the historical context has also been taken into account. I wish our police officers a good start,” said regional police chief Andreas Pilsl.
In 2016, Austria took over the property from a private owner to stop neo-Nazis from making it a gathering place. Since then, the Austrian government has invested roughly €20 Mln to give the notorious building a deliberately understated look.
“The police station will discourage Hitler admirers from taking selfies in front of the completely redesigned building,» historian Oliver Rathkolb told Deutsche Welle.
Ironically, Hitler’s final officially registered residence in Germany now serves a similar purpose. Following the Second World War, the Bavarian regional government repurposed the building for administrative use before it became a police station in 1998.
