At just 15, India’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the youngest player to win the Player of the Series award in men’s international cricket.
The left-handed batter won the award after scoring 151 runs as India beat Zimbabwe 3-0 in the Twenty20 series. He smashed a fast 50 from 18 balls in the first match and added a steady 81 in the final game, making him the first player to score two T20 international half-centuries before turning 16.
This achievement marks a big comeback after a tough start to his international career against England earlier in July, when he managed just 42 runs in three innings. In the Zimbabwe match, his performance is earning him a reputation of cricket’s most promising young talents.
Coach praises Sooryavanshi’s maturity
India’s stand-in coach VVS Laxman said Sooryavanshi’s greatest strength is not only his batting, but also his eagerness to learn.
“Very mature. And that’s what I really appreciate about Vaibhav. With each and every experience, each and every match, he understands, he assesses, and he gets better,” Laxman was quoted by the Times of India.
Laxman also said that improving his overall fitness is the next step for Sooryavanshi, but he believes the 15-year-old already has the mindset for a long international career.
