Genshin Impact Version 7.0: Snezhnaya Unveiled, Introducing the Shadow Realm and Third-Person Shooting Mechanics

The long-awaited arrival of Snezhnaya is finally upon us. During the Genshin Impact Version 7.0 Special Program, the development team lifted the veil on Teyvat’s frigid seventh nation. Launching on August 12, this massive update introduces a completely transformed combat system, radical environmental survival mechanics, and a deeply political narrative that brings players face-to-face with the Tsaritsa and her Fatui Harbingers.
The Shadow Realm and the struggle against fate
The broadcast opened with a chilling story trailer that immediately set the stakes for the upcoming Archon Quests (Chapter VII: Acts I and II). The footage begins with the Traveler desperately searching for Paimon in the «Shadow Realm», a bleak void devoid of wind, light, flowing elemental energy, and even time itself.
The narrative quickly shifts to the high-stakes politics of Snezhnaya. A meeting of Harbingers, including Pantalone, Tartaglia, the Rooster, and Pierro, reveals the ongoing execution of «Project Stuzha.» The trailer underscores Snezhnaya’s core ideological conflict: a nation in solidarity with the Tsaritsa, aiming to overthrow the Heavenly Principles to usher in a new world order.
We are also introduced to Ronova, the Ruler of Death, who issues a stark warning to the Harbingers that «not even a Descender can hope to escape unscathed» when the day of reckoning arrives. The Tsaritsa herself, Anastasya Feodorovna Snezhnaya, is positioned not merely as a Cryo Archon, but as a ruler leading a grueling campaign far from her capital to prevent her nation from sharing the tragic fate of Khaenri’ah.
In a massive lore bombshell dropped casually by the hosts during the stream, it was revealed just how deep her ties to the fallen nation run, confirming that «all Khaenri’ahns are descendants of the Tsaritsa.»
New faces of Snezhnaya: ballerinas and hunters
Version 7.0 brings a compelling cast of characters deeply intertwined with Snezhnaya’s unique culture, kicking off with two major additions in the Phase 1 Event Wishes:
- Odette (5-Star): The prima ballerina of Snezhnograd’s Korolevskiy Theater. Odette leads a double life as a highly agile Fatui assassin, heavily favored and trained by the late Signora. In combat, she summons her «Solo Dance Double,» utilizing graceful, razor-sharp strikes that shift between White and Black Swan personas.
- Alyosha (4-Star): A rugged border-town hunter who views both beasts and potential rivals as prey. Wielding Electro, Alyosha fights alongside his trusty hound, Tugarin, to lay traps, taunt enemies, and provide healing to the active party.
Phase 1 will also feature a rerun for Arlecchino, while Phase 2 will introduce Flins and Ineffa to the Character Event Wishes.
Exploring the frozen wasteland

Snezhnaya is depicted as a nation of heavy industry and extreme cold, surviving only because of the first Cryo Archon (the Belyi Tsar), who utilized «Kresnik Kristall» energy to build a massive subterranean torch that keeps the nation alive.
Travelers will navigate this vast territory not just on foot, but via a comprehensive railway system. Roaring trains connect the bustling capital of Snezhnograd, home to Northland Bank and the Korolevskiy Theater, to outer settlements like Tartaglia’s hometown of Morepesok.
To survive the sheer cold, players will rely on a new gadget called the «Eye of Graeae.» Rather than relying on the passive warming mechanics of Dragonspine, this gadget actively consumes stored Kresnik Energy. Furthermore, players can use it to gather «Prime Ice» and build environmental constructs, ranging from snow-launchers to portable heat sources, that can be shared with other players in a cooperative multiplayer twist.
«Stellar Glimmer» and third-person shooting
Perhaps the most radical addition to Genshin Impact in Version 7.0 is the overhaul of combat mechanics. Thanks to an ancient power brought by the «Third Descender,» the Traveler can unlock Stellar Glimmer reactions at Snezhnaya’s Statues of The Seven:
- Stellar-Conduct (Cryo + Electro): Creates a «Starlight Prism» and a «Polestar Field» that buffs Physical, Cryo, and Electro damage while decreasing enemy resistance.
- Stellar Swirl (Anemo + Cryo): Summons an exploding «Stellar Vortex» that levels up with repeated triggers, dealing massive AoE damage.
Snezhnaya’s industrial aesthetic is fully realized with the introduction of third-person shooting gameplay. Moving beyond bows, players will wield actual firearms, including precision Cryo rifles, auto-locking Electro rifles, and AoE grenade launchers. Designed to accommodate both veteran shooter fans and casual players, the system includes cover mechanics, sliding, vaulting, and aim assist, fully integrating elemental reactions into intense firefights against new enemies like the Fatui Skirmishers and Oprichniki.
