Thai PM condemns chonburi mass murders and demands harsh penalties
Thailand’s leader has diverted his official weekend schedule to personally inspect the aftermath of a gruesome five-fold homicide in Chonburi province.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cut short a planned visit to Suphan Buri on Saturday, flying directly to the eastern coastal region to monitor the police investigation involving the deaths of two Russian citizens and three locals.
Addressing the media, the prime minister condemned the brutal acts allegedly carried out by two paroled ex-convicts known as Pong and Thong. He argued the tragedy struck a devastating blow to the nation’s global standing.
«They did not just kill two foreigners and three Thais; they have ‘killed’ the Thai people as a whole and have destroyed our efforts to build confidence among foreigners, causing damage to our country,» Anutin told reporters.
The head of state stressed his need to witness the severity of the crimes first-hand.
Calls for maximum penalties
The murders have ignited a fierce public debate regarding the perceived leniency of the domestic justice system. With both suspects possessing extensive prior criminal records, prominent public figures are demanding strict legal retaliation. Detectives are currently gathering forensic evidence and conducting witness interviews to ensure the impending prosecution case is impenetrable.
Dr Rienthong Nanna, the director of Mongkutwattana Hospital, publicly condemned current law enforcement protocols as being excessively forgiving towards repeat offenders.
«Mercy should be shown to those who deserve it, not to former convicts who go on to kill three Thais and two Russians,» Dr Rienthong stated.
He argued that execution remains the only appropriate punishment for such hardened criminals, noting that the country rarely carries out the death penalty in practice.
Anutin similarly called for the perpetrators to face severe judicial consequences. While acknowledging that the courts will ultimately decide the final sentencing, he instructed authorities to ensure the legal process moves swiftly without offering the suspects any undue leniency. The prime minister concluded by issuing a formal apology to residents in Suphan Buri for his unexpected departure, stating the crisis necessitated his absolute attention.
