82-year-old cyclist dies after 3,300-mile charity ride across Australia
A committed fundraiser has passed away 24 hours after finishing a 5,300-kilometre bicycle journey spanning the Australian continent. At 82 years old, Bob Montgomery undertook the feat to generate financial backing for a motor neurone disease charity.
He titled this six-week endeavour «One Last Ride». Riding alongside his teenage grandson Tom Malcolm, the veteran cyclist navigated the vast distance separating Broome on the west coast from the regional town of Bowral. Residents greeted the pair with an enthusiastic reception upon their Sunday arrival. Malcolm then rode the remaining distance into central Sydney the following day.
Relatives convened in the New South Wales capital to commemorate the successful expedition. However, the joyful reunion was cut short when the elderly rider experienced a sudden medical emergency. Loved ones later released a digital statement confirming his passing. They noted that Jenny, his spouse of nearly six decades, stayed close to him until the very end.
Commitment to healthcare fundraising
This recent coast-to-coast campaign gathered around A$105,000 for MND NSW. The late fundraiser dedicated himself to fighting the severe neurological illness following the death of a close cousin. He previously explained online that witnessing loved ones battle the sickness pushed him into active philanthropy.
The transcontinental push represented the sixth major cycling challenge of his life. Through these combined physical trials, he successfully secured nearly A$300,000 to assist researchers and medical support teams.
Liam O’Meara, who heads the regional health charity, shared grief regarding the news. The executive remembered Bob Montgomery as an endlessly dedicated ally and beloved companion. According to family members, the veteran rider used his final waking hours to eagerly promote his charitable vision.
In an interview broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation just before his collapse, the cyclist praised the remarkable kindness shown by random citizens. He recalled how numerous people willingly donated cash whenever he paused to rest. He cited these highway encounters and the prospect of an evening pint as the key factors keeping his pedals turning.
