Former animator says GTA 6 could face another six-month delay

Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) could face a third postponement of up to six months as developers prioritise product polish over scheduled deadlines.
While the title currently holds an official release date of November 19, 2026, former Rockstar animator Mike York suggested the timeline could stretch into May 2027. York indicated the studio will push the launch by another half year if the team feels the game requires further refinement.
York clarified he no longer works at the studio and lacks current insider knowledge. He based his forecast entirely on his previous experience at the company, noting that major titles routinely saw extensions to ensure absolute quality at launch.
Past delays and high financial stakes
The upcoming instalment has already experienced two significant schedule adjustments. Initially projected for a late 2025 debut, Rockstar pushed the GTA 6 release to May 2026 before settling on the current November window. During the previous delay, the studio publicly apologised for adding time to a wait that began when development reportedly started in 2018.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has a massive financial incentive to ensure a flawless rollout rather than rushing to market. The franchise’s previous entry, Grand Theft Auto V, launched in 2013 and subsequently generated an estimated $8.6bn in revenue alongside more than 220mn copies sold.
When it does arrive, the GTA 6 will return players to Vice City, a fictionalised version of Miami. It features two playable protagonists named Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, marking the first time the series will feature a female lead character.
Despite facing recent internal challenges, including reported layoffs among UK-based staff earlier this year, Rockstar continues to post robust financial results. These figures remain driven by the sustained profitability of GTA Online. For now, the developer maintains the November 2026 launch date and has not publicly indicated that another delay is under consideration.
