At least five people have died after a landslide struck homes in Mumbai early on Wednesday, with several others feared trapped under debris. Rescue teams are searching the site as heavy monsoon rain continues to disrupt parts of the city.
The landslide hit Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar area at about 3.48am, according to Mumbai’s fire brigade, cited by local media outlet NDTV. Officials said part of a hillside gave way and debris crashed onto two to three homes.
Emergency crews from the fire brigade, police and the National Disaster Response Force are using specialised victim-detection cameras to search for survivors. Two injured teenagers were taken to hospital and were reported to be in stable condition, while the number of people still missing remains unclear.

Mumbai rains top 2,000mm as flights face disruption
Seasonal rainfall in Mumbai has now passed the 2,000mm mark, according to The Indian Express, with heavy showers also affecting neighbouring Thane and Palghar. The India Meteorological Department has forecast further rain, keeping the risk of waterlogging and local disruption elevated.
The weather is also threatening air travel. Low-cost airline SpiceJet warned that heavy rain could affect arrivals and departures at Mumbai airport and urged passengers to check their flight status before travelling, according to The Times of India.
