Disney Animation has greenlit a third instalment in its blockbuster «Zootopia» franchise. The announcement arrived during the D23 Expo entertainment showcase where studio executives teased an expansion of the mammalian universe to include avian characters.
Disney Animation chief Jared Bush appeared alongside voice actors Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan to confirm the project. Goodwin will reprise her role as rabbit police officer Judy Hopps while Quan returns as Gary the snake. The studio revealed a title graphic featuring the number three constructed entirely from feathers. This design choice pays off a subtle post-credits scene in «Zootopia 2» where a bird feather drifted onto Hopps’s windowsill.
Expanding a billion-dollar property
The decision to continue the narrative follows unprecedented financial returns for the intellectual property. «Zootopia 2» dominated global box offices to gross $1.86bn. This performance eclipsed the 2016 original and cemented the sequel as the highest-grossing release in Walt Disney Animation Studios history. Combined ticket sales for the first two films now exceed $2.7bn worldwide.
Executives withheld a specific release date for the upcoming feature. The animation process typically requires several years of intensive development and production before a project is ready for its theatrical debut.
The franchise’s massive commercial footprint already extends well beyond local cinemas. The property supports a dedicated Disney+ streaming series and prominent theme park attractions across the globe. Recent additions to the company’s portfolio include the «Zootopia: Hot Pursuit» trackless ride in Shanghai Disneyland and an immersive 3D show at Animal Kingdom in Florida.
By pushing into unexplored biomes and introducing bird species the creative team aims to revitalise the established formula. The third picture will force its ground-dwelling protagonists to look upward as they navigate entirely new societal dynamics alongside fresh suspects and allies.
