Disney offered audiences an early look at the next chapter of its animated blockbuster franchise during the D23 fan event on Friday, revealing major plot points for the upcoming «Frozen 3.»
The studio confirmed the highly anticipated sequel will centre on the royal wedding between Anna and Kristoff following their engagement at the conclusion of the previous film. However, the celebratory event will not proceed smoothly. Footage shown to attendees debuted a mysterious new female antagonist who crashes the nuptials, launching the returning cast into an entirely new adventure.
Voice actors Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell and Josh Gad took the stage at the Disney Entertainment Showcase to discuss the project and perform together. Menzel warned the audience that the sisters’ forthcoming journey will take them far beyond the familiar borders of Arendelle into a dangerous, untamed land. Bell teased that the ensuing conflict represents the most daunting challenge the royal siblings have faced thus far.
A snowy romance
Beyond the central conflict, the presentation confirmed a comedic romantic subplot for the franchise’s beloved talking snowman. Olaf will receive a love interest named Samantha, paying off a brief joke from «Frozen 2» where the character wandered through an enchanted forest calling out a fabricated name.
Gad revealed the sequel will feature an original song written specifically for this new dynamic, continuing the musical traditions crafted by returning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.
The preview also showcased updated character designs. Statues displayed at the convention featured Elsa in a striking blue dress adorned with diamond crystals, while Anna wore a pink floral gown. Olaf, Kristoff and his reindeer companion Sven sported formal attire, seemingly prepared for the disrupted wedding ceremony.
The animated feature is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 24, 2027, just ahead of the US Thanksgiving holiday. Directors Jennifer Lee and Trent Correy are guiding the production, which represents the franchise’s first theatrical release in eight years.
Studio executives previously confirmed the development of a fourth film, noting that the creative team is working on the two sequels simultaneously. These upcoming instalments aim to resolve lingering mysteries from the original storyline, including the definitive origins of Elsa’s magical abilities.
