Father abandons tired 7-year-old son on Mount Fuji climb

A 48-year-old man received a stern police warning after abandoning his seven-year-old son on Mount Fuji. The incident occurred on August 20 when the child became too exhausted to continue ascending Japan’s highest peak.
The family from Nagoya was hiking the steep Fujinomiya route before dawn. Around 4:30 a.m., they reached the sixth station at an altitude of approximately 2,490 metres. When the second-grade student began crying from fatigue, his father told him to wait behind. The man then carried on towards the summit with his middle school-aged son who had hiked ahead.
The incident took place during the peak summer climbing season, which runs from early July to early September. Mount Fuji attracts hundreds of thousands of domestic and international visitors during this brief window, often leading to severe overcrowding on popular trails.
Discovered at a mountain hut
Staff at a nearby mountain hut found the boy sitting alone on a bench three hours later. The child told rescuers his father instructed him to wait for eight hours. He carried only snacks and a sports drink, with no money to purchase additional supplies.
Hut employees immediately alerted the Fujinomiya Police Station. Officers arrived to safely retrieve the child and take him into protective custody. Authorities eventually contacted the father at the eighth station and intercepted him as he descended around noon.
Police issued a severe verbal reprimand before returning the child to his care. The man apologised to the officers, admitting his actions were careless.
Experts condemn dangerous decision
The decision drew sharp criticism from the Japanese mountaineering community. Renowned 52-year-old alpinist Ken Noguchi condemned the father’s behaviour on social media. He described leaving a young child behind on the challenging terrain as an extremely serious safety failure.
私も娘が小学生の頃から一緒に山登りをしていますが、ぐずったから置き去りとは極めて深刻。7歳を山に置き去りとは…これは警察が取り調べをした方がいいレベルではないか。

Following the incident, local police issued a public reminder regarding group climbing protocols. Authorities stressed that hiking parties must match the pace of their weakest member and maintain constant communication to avoid separation.
