Samsung redirects 2027 phone parts to meet Galaxy Z Fold 8 demand
Unprecedented consumer interest in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 has forced the technology giant to reallocate manufacturing capacity originally reserved for its 2027 smartphone lineup.
The company has struggled to maintain sufficient stock levels since the flagship device launched. Initial supplies were quickly exhausted, triggering immediate shipping delays for consumers worldwide.
The rapid depletion of initial stock highlights how consumer adoption of foldable screens is accelerating faster than analysts initially anticipated. To resolve the widening inventory shortfall, Samsung executives instructed their supply chain to manufacture an additional 1mn units.
However, scaling up operations has created a severe supply chain bottleneck involving highly specific internal components.
Resolving the component shortage
The primary manufacturing hurdle centres on display driver integrated circuits. These chips control the screen’s visual output and are critical for the foldable display. A Taiwanese semiconductor foundry, UMC, builds these 22-nanometre components for Samsung.
According to industry reports, the supplier has reached its maximum production threshold.
Because the components are tailor-made for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 rather than being interchangeable across different models, Samsung cannot simply swap existing hardware from other product lines. Instead, the South Korean firm is reassigning its reserved 2027 production volume at the Taiwanese facility to focus exclusively on creating parts for the current foldable device.
To expedite the process further, Samsung requested a premium express service from the foundry to push the display drivers through the assembly line as quickly as possible.
These severe supply constraints coincide with a broader, rapid expansion across the foldable technology sector.
Technology research firm Omdia recently projected that global shipments for foldable smartphones will double by 2028 to reach approximately 36mn units.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 currently remains partially out of stock on Samsung’s digital storefront in the United States. The manufacturer has not confirmed when regular inventory levels will stabilise for American, European and Asian markets.
