Sebastian Vettel returned to the Formula 1 paddock on Sunday to pilot Michael Schumacher‘s legendary Ferrari F2002.
The four-time world champion completed an emotional demonstration lap around the Monza circuit shortly before the Italian Grand Prix commenced. The run formed part of a special weekend celebrating 30 years since Schumacher first arrived at the Maranello factory.
Vettel thrilled the passionate Italian fans by performing donuts on the asphalt, bringing the roaring V10 engine back to life at a track synonymous with Ferrari’s historic triumphs. The F2002 chassis stands as one of the most successful designs in motorsport history, having dominated its era and secured Schumacher his fifth consecutive drivers’ title.
Emotional connection to a childhood idol
For the retired German driver, the opportunity to handle this specific piece of machinery carried profound personal meaning. Vettel grew up idolising Schumacher before following his trajectory into Formula 1 and eventually racing for the Scuderia himself. Following his stint in the cockpit, a visibly moved Vettel remarked that he felt his mentor’s presence throughout the exhibition laps.
He emphasised that the demonstration was far more than a simple track run. Vettel explained that driving a championship-winning car in front of the Tifosi allowed everyone present to connect with Schumacher’s enduring legacy.
Although no longer competing professionally, Vettel noted his lifelong love for racing made the tribute incredibly special. To align with modern environmental standards, the vintage vehicle operated entirely on advanced sustainable fuel developed by Shell.
Connecting two distinct racing generations
The Sunday spectacle followed a similar exhibition the previous afternoon featuring Rubens Barrichello. Schumacher’s former teammate took the wheel on Saturday, reuniting with the exact vehicle model he drove to victory at the 2002 Italian Grand Prix.
The F2002 remains a pinnacle of mechanical engineering, having won 14 of the 15 races it entered across the 2002 and 2003 seasons under the technical leadership of Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne. The Brazilian’s involvement represented the closest racing link to Ferrari’s dominant period, while Vettel stood for the subsequent generation directly inspired by those remarkable achievements.
Beyond the track displays, Ferrari integrated the anniversary celebrations into its modern racing operations. The team decorated its current SF-26 challengers with a retro livery inspired by the F310. This design paid homage to the car Schumacher drove during his debut season with the Italian outfit in 1996.
Additional stylistic touches included Schumacher’s signature on the engine cover and his iconic seven-star helmet graphic positioned on the nose. Furthermore, drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton wore bespoke retro overalls and helmets to fully immerse the garage in the commemorative weekend.
