Global music superstar Lisa was greeted by piercing screams from fans as she walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of her new documentary, «Always Lalisa».

The Blackpink band member takes centre stage in the film, which chronicles a pivotal year in her life. The documentary captures her journey as she steps away from the South Korean pop group to embark on a solo career.

Directed by Sue Kim, the project follows the singer through several major professional milestones between 2024 and 2025. Cameras documented the release of her debut solo album «Alter Ego» alongside her acting debut in HBO‘s hit series «The White Lotus». It also showcases preparations for her solo performance before massive crowds at the Coachella music festival.

Balancing global fame and personal discovery

Beyond her high-profile public appearances, the film explores the contrast between her status as a global superstar and her quest for personal growth.

«I just tried to find new things, like, what can I do more than this?» she said in an interview following the September 11 premiere.

The singer, whose full name is Lalisa Manoban, noted that she initially believed a year would be sufficient for her solo venture but is still discovering what she loves and determining her next challenge.

Director Sue Kim, who previously served as an executive producer on the Apple TV documentary series «K-Pop Idols», captured this transition period by gaining unprecedented access to the artist beyond her public K-pop image.

Kim noted the production offered rare proximity and exposure to a performer who is typically presented through a highly specific and curated image. The documentary aims to showcase an authentic side of the musician that exists entirely outside the traditional world of K-pop.
