Sony unveils all-black PS5 with November release and lower price

Sony has unveiled a new all-black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, introducing its Midnight Black colour scheme to the console ahead of a November 19 launch in Japan.
The new PS5 will cost 55,000 yen (approximately $365), with pre-orders opening on October 20 through Japanese PlayStation retailers and online stores, according to Sony’s official announcement on October 13.
Unlike the standard white-and-black console, the new edition features an entirely dark exterior and comes with a matching Midnight Black DualSense controller.
However, the console is exclusive to Japan, with its system language locked to Japanese. It also requires a PlayStation Network account registered in Japan, meaning international buyers cannot use it with accounts from other regions.
Black PS5 price, specifications and availability
The Midnight Black PS5 is based on Sony’s existing Digital Edition rather than a new generation of hardware.
It retains the standard PS5’s AMD Zen 2 processor, RDNA-based graphics architecture, 16GB of GDDR6 memory and an 825GB SSD.
The console also supports 3D audio, ray tracing, backwards compatibility with supported PS4 games and the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
The new model does not include a built-in disc drive. However, Sony is releasing a matching Midnight Black detachable drive for 11,980 yen (approximately $80) on November 19.
Customers who purchase the console before March 31, 2027, can also apply for an extended manufacturer’s warranty, increasing coverage from one year to two years.
The Midnight Black model costs the same as Japan’s existing Japanese-language PS5 Digital Edition. Sony has not announced a global release or confirmed whether the colour will become available on international versions of the console.

The launch comes as Sony expands its Midnight Black accessory collection, which already includes controllers, headsets and the PlayStation Portal remote player.
