Trump Delivers On Promise: US Imposes 25% Tariff On Imports From Canada And Mexico
The United States has imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, CNN reports.
Trump had pledged this move just two days earlier.
«Today, I have imposed a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada (including a 10% tariff on Canadian energy products) and an additional 10% tariff on China,» he announced on Truth Social on Saturday.
The US president cited the growing threats of drug trafficking and illegal migration as the basis for his decision, invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned Americans of the «real consequences» of this policy.
«As I have repeatedly stated, tariffs against Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down US auto assembly plants and other manufacturing facilities,» Trudeau said.
In response, Canada will introduce a 25% tariff on US goods.
Mexico plans to take similar action, as confirmed by President Claudia Sheinbaum.
«I have instructed the Minister of Economy to implement Plan B, which we have been working on. It includes tariff and non-tariff measures to protect Mexico’s interests,» she wrote on X.
