Uzbekistan to Pay $10,000 to Each WWII Veteran on Victory Day

Uzbekistan will provide each World War II veteran, including those with disabilities, $10,000 (approximately UZS 118 mln) as part of the Victory Day celebrations on May 9, also known as the Day of Remembrance and Honor. The announcement was made in a decree signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
In addition to veterans, citizens recognized as equivalent to WWII veterans will receive UZS 25 mln (around $1,930). Wartime workers from 1941-1945 will be given UZS 3 mln (roughly $230) by May 9. These payments will be fully funded by the national budget.
Uzbekistan has a long-standing tradition of honoring its veterans. During World War II, about 2 mln Uzbek citizens served, with over 538,000 dying and 158,000 going missing. To mark the 80th anniversary of the victory, the government will organize celebratory events across the country, including a festive salute and fireworks. These events will also include support for lonely and low-income veterans with improved living conditions, medical assistance, and free sanatorium vouchers.
As of 2023, there were 174 WWII veterans in Uzbekistan. By May 2024, that number is expected to drop to 112. Veterans and labor front participants will also receive commemorative medals as part of the national tribute to their legacy.
