Luis Díaz is on the verge of joining Bayern Munich after Liverpool agreed to a transfer deal worth up to €75 mln (£65.5 mln), the Guardian reports. The 28-year-old Colombian international is expected to leave the Reds’ pre-season camp in Tokyo to undergo a medical with the Bundesliga champions.

Bayern have pursued Díaz for some time and ultimately met Liverpool’s valuation to secure the move. Díaz had shown openness to a transfer as early as summer 2024, prompting negotiations that have now come to fruition. Despite offering the winger two new contract extensions, Liverpool have opted to cash in as they restructure their attacking options.

The former Porto star was absent from Liverpool’s recent 4-2 pre-season loss to AC Milan in Hong Kong.

Head coach Arne Slot confirmed his omission was linked to the transfer: «In Lucho’s situation, yes,» Slot said. «There are many rumours and I can’t get into them, but he’s been training well. We’ve just chosen not to involve him for now.»

Liverpool initially signed Díaz in January 2022 for €45 mln plus potential add-ons. So far, only €4 mln in bonuses have been activated, bringing the total cost to €49 mln. The player is likely to depart Liverpool’s camp within 24 hours, ahead of their upcoming match against Yokohama F. Marinos.

Díaz’s exit contributes to a broader squad reshuffle at Anfield. The club have already made two major signings this summer, Florian Wirtz, a long-standing Bayern target, and Hugo Ekitike. These deals rank among the most expensive in Liverpool’s history. The club are also reportedly monitoring Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who is said to be open to a move.

Darwin Núñez also sat out the Milan match, though Slot cited fitness concerns rather than transfer speculation in his case. The sale of Díaz pushes Liverpool’s revenue from player sales under sporting director Richard Hughes, appointed in June 2024, towards the £190 mln mark.

In defence, Jarell Quansah’s departure has created a potential gap, though Slot maintains confidence in his centre-back options. «I don’t think we have an issue at centre-back,» he said. «Ryan [Gravenberch] showed today he can play there, like he did last season. Although we prefer him as a No 6. Wataru [Endo] can play there as well. Joe Gomez has only a minor injury.»

New signings Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamardashvili featured in the second half of the Milan friendly, with Wirtz making his debut start for the club.

Kursiv also reports that former head coach of Uzbekistan’s national football team, Srečko Katanec, has called on fans not to expect major achievements from the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
