Specialists from Uzatom are examining how a large nuclear power plant could be integrated into Uzbekistan’s energy system, the agency’s director Azim Akhmedkhadjaev told the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel.

Agency aims to begin work on the project in the shortest possible time and has already launched the necessary research. The large-scale facility could be built in parallel with a smaller nuclear plant currently planned for the Jizzakh region. The project’s prospects were recently discussed at a meeting on Tashkent’s energy supply chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Plans for a high-capacity nuclear plant in Uzbekistan were first announced in October 2024 by the Minister of Energy, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov.

On June 20, 2025, Rosatom and Uzatom signed an agreement to conduct research for the construction of the large plant and approved a roadmap for the project’s development through to 2027. Current proposals include installing two or four power units equipped with VVER-1000 reactors.
