Moscow and Bishkek in Talks on Localising Russian Car Production in Kyrgyzstan

Moscow and Bishkek are negotiating the potential localisation of Russian car manufacturing in Kyrgyzstan, with both sides aiming to reach agreements on contracts for vehicle supplies. The announcement was made by Roman Chekushov, Deputy Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, during the Kyrgyz-Russian Economic Forum in Cholpon-Ata.
Chekushov noted that a global trend has emerged for automobile producers to establish production facilities in the countries where they seek a market presence.
«Kyrgyzstan is no exception. We expect that several discussions will take place on the possibility of localising Russian car production here,» he said.
He added that Russia holds strong expertise in both passenger and commercial vehicles and confirmed that the Russian side is prepared to finalise a number of contracts for car deliveries.
The talks come against a backdrop of declining production at home. In the first half of this year, Russia’s passenger car output fell by 2.1% compared with the same period last year. The drop in June alone exceeded 28% year-on-year.
