Merseyside Police confirmed that a 47-year-old man was removed from Anfield on Saturday, August 16, after allegedly directing racist abuse at Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo during the Premier League opener against Liverpool.

Match Interrupted After Semenyo Reported Abuse

The match was paused in the 28th minute after Semenyo drew referee Anthony Taylor’s attention to a comment from the stands. Both managers, Liverpool’s Arne Slot and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, were informed as officials followed the league’s anti-discrimination protocol.

Sky Sports commentator Peter Drury told viewers that Semenyo himself had highlighted the incident. Reporter Laura Hunter later observed a supporter being escorted from the ground by police officers before the second half began.

Semenyo was also subjected to racist abuse on Instagram the previous evening, some of which he shared publicly with the caption, «when will it stop?»

Condemnation from Clubs and Authorities

Bournemouth captain Adam Smith called the incident «unacceptable» while manager Iraola described it as a «big shame», adding that racism remains a «serious problem not just in football.»

In statements released after the match, the Premier League, Liverpool and the Football Association all strongly condemned the abuse. The Premier League said the case would be «fully investigated» and reiterated that «racism has no place in our game or anywhere in society.»

Liverpool pledged full cooperation with police inquiries, while the FA expressed concern and promised to work with clubs, match officials and authorities to ensure appropriate action.
